Geopolitics, trade wars and Capital Flows
Now in its 16th year, the Morningstar Investment Conference, India aims to deliver a day full of thought-provoking conversations. We are especially looking forward to our keynote speakers, K Rajaraman and Navtej Sarna, as geopolitics, trade wars, and foreign capital flows remain top of mind for investors today.
India's Gateway to the Global Financial Future
India's economic aspirations are ambitious as we aim to become a $30-trillion economy by 2047. Central to this vision is GIFT City, India's first International Financial Services Centre, which seeks to establish itself as a credible global financial hub. We are honored to host Shri K. Rajaraman, Chairperson of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), who is playing a pivotal role in this transformation. With nearly 35 years of senior government experience, including leading India's first 5G spectrum auction and holding key roles in the Ministry of Finance and infrastructure sectors, Rajaraman brings a rare blend of expertise to his current position. His leadership is instrumental in shaping the regulatory framework that underpins GIFT City’s ambitions.
The keynote speech by Rajaraman highlights the urgency of addressing India's historical constraints, such as capital controls, regulatory fragmentation, and reliance on offshore financial hubs. GIFT City aims to resolve these issues by offering a globally aligned jurisdiction where international banks, funds, and businesses can operate seamlessly, while Indian investors gain streamlined access to global markets. He outlines how IFSCA's progressive policies are attracting international capital, the evolving opportunities for Indian investors, and the challenges that GIFT City must overcome to fulfill its potential. This initiative aligns closely with the broader Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, underscoring India's intent to play a more prominent role in global finance.
The World in Disarray: India's Priorities and Challenges
Ambassador Navtej Sarna is one of India’s most accomplished former diplomats, bringing nearly four decades of experience in navigating complex geopolitical landscapes. His career highlights include serving as India’s Ambassador to Israel, High Commissioner to the United Kingdom during the Brexit referendum, and the Ambassador to United States during a pivotal period in U.S.-India relations.
In a freewheeling conversation around "The World in Disarray: India's Priorities and Challenges," Sarna will delve into India’s strategic navigation of a fragmented global order. Drawing on his deep expertise, he will explore India’s positioning amid shifting alliances, transactional trade dynamics, and evolving supply chains driven by geopolitical rivalries. With firsthand experience managing India’s relationships with key nations like Israel, the UK, and the U.S., Sarna is uniquely equipped to shed light on how India is redefining strategic autonomy in an era of diminishing multilateralism and intensifying great-power competition. This session promises to offer attendees an insider’s view of India’s evolving role in a dynamic multi-polar world.
