Direct plans constitute 45% or Rs 12.32 lakh crore of the total Rs 27.12 lakh crore industry assets as on July 2020, shows data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).
Individual investors, including retail and high net worth individuals hold, 22% or Rs 2.71 lakh crore slice of the Rs 12.32 lakh crore direct assets pie.
Non-individual investors hold 78% or Rs 9.61 lakh crore worth assets in direct plans. Non-individual investors majorly invest in direct plans of liquid, money market, and overnight funds to park their excess cash.
Individual investors hold a large share of regular plan assets. Of Rs 14.80 lakh crore regular plan assets, Rs 11.40 lakh crore was held by individual investors while the remaining Rs 3.40 lakh crore was held by institutional investors.
T30 cities account for a major share of the individual investor assets in regular plans. Of 11.40 lakh crore worth assets held by individual investors in regular plans, Rs 74% or Rs 8.47 lakh crore is concentrated in T30 cities while the remaining Rs 2.93 lakh crore came from beyond 30 cities.
Direct plans are more popular in T30 cities. Of Rs 2.71 lakh crore direct plan assets held by individual investors, 82% or Rs 2.23 lakh crore came from T30 cities while the remaining Rs 48 lakh came from beyond 30 cities.
