Ask Morningstar: Are we headed towards a recession?

Jul 16, 2022

If there is a recession, how must I change my stock investing strategy?

Ben Bernanke: January 17, 2008. The then Federal Reserve Chairman told lawmakers that even though the U.S. economy is facing a difficult combination of circumstances, the Fed is not forecasting a recession and the U.S. economy remains extraordinarily resilient. Well, we know how that panned out.

Howard Marks: On CNBC in 2019, when asked if the U.S. is heading towards a recession. We’re always heading to a recession. The question is this year, next year, or five years from now.

James Montier in “7 sins of fund management”: Using forecasts as an integral part of the investment process is like tying one hand behind your back before you start. An enormous amount of evidence and anecdotal experience suggests that investors are generally hopeless at it. The core root of this inability seems to lie in the fact that we all seem to be over-optimistic and over-confident.

Why do we persist in using forecasts in the investment process? Because humans do not do well with uncertainty and cling to anything as support.

This is important:

  • There are only two types of forecasts: Lucky and Wrong. Stop relying on forecasts to guide you.
  • Be an investor, not a forecaster. As an investor, you cannot place forecasting at the heart of the investment process.
  • Analyse rather than try to guess the unknowable. Look for sound businesses, stable cash flows and good management. Comprehend whether a true margin of safety exists between the fundamental fair value and the current price. When you have done all that, thoughtfully allocate money towards long-term opportunities.
  • Stick to your investment strategy. Focus on the long-term fundamental drivers of returns. The process will deliver, not the predictions.

Can someone, anyone, explain to me what is Recession.

The word Recession popped out of nowhere when stock prices started falling from the all time high of 18000 (nifty). The experts wanted to explain what is the reason and they started talking about Recession. I asked one expert, let me know what happens during a Recession. Is it similar to Corona that there will be lockdown, everyone sits at home, Central Banks dole out cash - What is this called recession. What actually happens during this period. Can someone let me know what time frame in the past was recession. Because I want to know, how it feels to be in a recession.
None of the experts know and they just co-relate the recession part to the stock price fall. Now why did the stock market from an all time of 18,000 fall. The reason being.
1. Correction has to happen, this is a cliche answer.
2. Inflation in US which is at all time high of 9% was the main cause for FII to sell and take their money out. FII took out the money as it was lucrative to invest in their country than invest in a emerging economy like India. When the selling started, each one wanted to outsmart the other as each sale would eventually result in demand for USD which will depreciate the INR. When this started, others followed, two things happened. The first guy who sold was able to get a higher market price for the stock and was able to convert to USD at 74 to 75. As each one knew the faster they took the money out they could convert it at better rate. Now the same FII can bring back the same money to India at a better rate of 80 and invest in the same stocks. FII who had leveraged would be settling their USD debt as Interest rate on lending would have increased there.

How do you explain this to an Retail Investor - Say recession and PE is higher than median and hence there is a correction. TCS, HDFC, HCL all have done well. But due to recession they stock stock price has corrected. Humbug.
